Hear & Feel the Music
Allowing your emotions to flow. Developing personality and
character
Special thanks to Ken Davis for use his melodious music from his CD
" The Call of the Dolphins". It is not strictly belly
dancing music but the melody, beat & flavor could be. I see it as
a modern adaptation, easy to dance to and excellent for beginners (and
beyond) to practice to, improve and combine movements and techniques.
To dream, romance and meditate in a most delightful way. Ken has been
very supportive and encouraging in my belly dancing career and had
faith in my ability to interpret his music in a befitting way.
Ken Davis was performing at the "Festival of Health &
Harmony" Sydney 1997 & I was invited to dance to his music.
He was intrigued with my performance and I was captivated by his
melodious music, which I use to warm up to before my performances.
Later realizing that I could adapt it to belly dancing.
I was delighted when Ken asked me to dance to a special 8 minute
Arabic composition that he had written. I had not heard it before
& his last words where that it was very powerful. This sent my
mind spinning. Oh well here we go. I waited in the wings for the first
few intro. bars. Veil ready and I slinked on stage. I used the very
same technique that I teach. Relax your mind, listen to the music
& feel the music. The veil, being a wonderful prop, I slowed the
music down with some basic steps, turns and presenting, while became
more accustomed to the flow and beat. With an open heart and a relaxed
mind I was able to let my inner spirit dance. Somewhere I discarded
the veil and continued on. I paced the dancing by using the fast and
slow expressive techniques. Using and combining sharp hip movements
with round movements such as pelvic and hip circles & loops.
Alternating to ribs and sensual shoulder dancing. Controlled my arms
& hands. In my blurry mind I could see that it all took shape. I
kept it tall, elegant and added personality. After a while I sensed an
ending and finished with an interesting pose. It was a wonderful
spontaneous performance. Ken expressed his pleasure.
And I thanked Ken for the opportunity
Also special thanks go to the ARC Music label for using Hossam Ramzy
music in my teaching videos. Hossam Ramzy - I met & spoke with him
when he came to Sydney in 1997 to conduct drumming and dancing
workshops. I participated in one of his workshops. He was very kind
and gracious to me and very encouraging, wished me luck and good
fortune on my project of producing the teaching videos.
