Notes from our own experience -
You do not have to expose your midriff. You can completely cover up
but make sure you are comfortable as you do build up a glow. There is
tap water available at the studio, however do bring your own drink if
possible.
Your aim is to "Look and "Feel" like a dancer. Please
No No track pants or jeans (only in
emergencies).
In belly dance hips are beautiful, so try not to hide your hips with
bulky T-shirts. No hips are too large and no hips are too thin. In
class we like to highlight hips by tying a scarf around the hips to
accentuate the hip movements.
Coin hip scarves are available for purchase.
You do not have to spend a fortune on class costumes. Inexpensive pieces are available in almost every clothing store. Or simply use what you already have until you are ready to dress up.
BRAs etc- Select a comfortable bra or sports bra. "Push ups" will make you feel uncomfortable. But if you must wear one, OK. Solid T-shirt bras are also comfortable. Some ladies may even find solid T-shirt strapless bras very comfortable.
G-string undergarments are not suitable. Choose cotton or cotton blends.
TOPs - Select from your wardrobe a comfortable cotton or
blended cotton/ polyester/ lycra T-shirt.
Or a
bling sequin cotton or blended top that are readily available in
most clothing and department stores. Avoid nylon or polyester as they
become stiflingly uncomfortable.
For menopausal
students wear a thin cotton loose fitting singlet, thin cotton, linen
or silk blouses with no sleeves. Anything with a sleeve becomes
unbearable. Cold drink a must. A spray bottle filled with icy water is
wonderful. An old fashioned hand fan is also helpful.
SKIRT - A flared or gathered skirt, that does not go past your ankles. The layered peasant skirts or Indian skirts make ideal practice skirts. Try to purchase a skirt with an elastic band. This will enable you to wear it from the hips. Make sure the hemline does not go past the ankles, otherwise you may trip in class, if the hemline is too long. A tight skirt needs splits for movement. A wrap around is OK as it has a natural split opening.
PANTS - Any loose fitting pants of cotton blend is also suitable. Make sure you can wear them from the hips. Otherwise an elastic waistband can be rolled over to fit hips. Tights with feet or without and leotard are acceptable for the cooler weather.
KIDS and TEENS - you may wear any short or long skirt, loose or tight skirt. If tight, have a split for movement. Any loose pants from the hips. Any top. Any dancing gear.
FOOTWEAR - dancing slippers of any kind, socks or bear feet. We prefer you to invest in ballet slippers to protect your feet against objects that are sometimes found, still lingering, after a clean up, especially if using the toilets and kitchen area. Be aware, even though we hire a modern studio which caters for dancing, it is not guaranteed that the floor is 100% suitable for bare feet all of the time.
Inexpensive class costuming, enjoy dressing up with colour and bling.
